Starting the day with a bowl of cereal seems to be losing favour, particularly among the younger generation. According to a recent report by market analysts Mintel, sales of traditional breakfast cereals suffered a decline in sales last year, including eight out of ten of the biggest selling brands. Kellogg’s Rice Krispies for example, saw a 15 percent drop in sales volume according to market research analysts SymphonyIRI.
The most popular breakfast among Britons is good old toast, which is eaten by 80 percent of us and porridge is also doing well. This may be partly due to its well promoted health benefits as well as the convenience offered by instant brands.
Cold cereal is still eaten by 76 percent of people, so it’s still a major part of the breakfast scene. However, the younger generation aged between 16-24 are showing a preference towards eating cereal bars, with 37 percent consuming them on a regular basis. And 40 percent of younger people consume yogurts or yogurt drinks for breakfast.
Cereal bars fit in well with today’s fast-paced lifestyles and many people perceive them as a healthier option and one which might help with weight loss. However, while grabbing a cereal bar on the way out the door is obviously quicker, they’re not always the healthiest option. Many are loaded with sugar and some of the granola-style bars also have a considerable amount of fat. Likewise, yogurt drinks are often loaded with sugar.
